Here is a wonderful story how a Christian hospital in Ludhiana, Punjab has changed the live of a paralytic young boy, who is now well off in his fifties.
Rattan Chand, 53, was not expecting anything more than medical treatment from the Christian Medical College Hospital (CMCH). But the helping hand extended to him by the hospital changed his life forever.
Admitted as a 14–year–old child suffering from complete paralysis of the lower body, Rattan was not only treated free of cost but was also given a job at the hospital.
Starting out as a typist in 1971, Rattan ascended the ladder of success and is currently serving as the assistant to head of surgical department.
After meeting with an accident that paralysed his lower limbs in 1968, Rattan was initially taken to PGI in Chandigarh. He was later brought to CMCH as his treatment was being delayed at PGI, he said.
After three months, his family could not afford to pay the bills. The management at the hospital then offered him free treatment for about six months.
“The hospital not only treated me for free, but also offered me a job as a typist while I was still in a state of depression,” remembers Rattan. He credits Dr FC Eggleston for the change in his life.
After accepting the job and performing well, he was promoted to the post of stenographer in late 1970s. Today, the hospital management feels Rattan has paid them back with his good work. “Now he is an asset for us,” says Dr John Pramod, Director, CMC.
“The best thing to have happened to me in the hospital is meeting my wife. Ever since I got married, my life has changed for better. Today, I feel content and have no regrets about my disability, though I had to struggle a lot,” he adds.
Rattan Chand's story will remain a wonderful testimony to this Christian Medical College and Hospital, and the people involved in it.
