AICC concerns over arrest of two nuns in Orissa

The arrest and imprisonment of two nuns from a Christian institution in Orissa recently, has placed serious concern by the All India Christian Council (aicc) over the issue.

A team appointed by the aicc visited the place and interacted with the nuns of the hostel and St Ann's school where the two nuns were staying. Rev PR Parichha, the aicc (Orissa Chapter) president, said, "It is surprising that the nuns were taken hurriedly to the police station in the early morning on 28 July 2007 as if they were criminals and sent to court without any proper intimation to the school authorities."

"As a result the two innocent nuns with physical ailment had to remain in custody for two days despite the offence stated was bailable. We are anguished to note that the manner in which the Section 4 of Freedom of Religion Act had been applied against the nuns", he added.

Rev Parichha, also noted that the police before taking an action should have investigated, as the two complainants who were admitted in the hostel were under the discipline of the institution.

The Christian Leader submitted a memorandum to the Chief Secretary, Government of Orissa, remarking the innocence of the nuns and the arrest which is based on baseless allegations.

The memorandum copies were also forwarded to some very important officers of the nation among who are the Principal Secretary – Home Department, the DG and the district and additional district collector of Mayurbhanj.

Rev Pariccha asked the police to not execute any actions against the Christian Community especially minorities without prudent investigation.

The institution that has been accused shelters a total of 89 girls and provides educational service to the people from many years.

Even during the past there were no accusations or complaints against the institution of conversion.
