Allahabad HC judge wants Bhagavad Gita be the national holy book

The statement of a High Court judge to consider Bhagvad Gita, be made the national ‘dharma shastra’ of the country and to have it a fundamental duty of all citizens to follow has sparked a controversy among religious communities.

Judge S N Srivastava, who made the observation while hearing a case filed by a priest said, the Bhagvad Gita had greatly inspired those involved in the freedom struggle and continues to inspire people from all walks of life and hence must be imposed and taught to the citizens of India.

“It is the duty of every citizen of India under Article 51–A of the Constitution of India, irrespective of caste, creed or religion, to follow dharma as propounded by the Bhagvad Gita," said the justice, quoted news sources.

Global Council of Indian Christians, president, Sajan K. George reacting to the statement said: "Bhagavad Gita is part of Indian culture; it cannot be seen as a religious text for all faiths. This goes against the constitution which guarantees religious freedom."

Surprisingly, Justice Srivastava retired on September 4, five days after passing the order.
