In a big boost to Dalits (untouchables) quest for reservation in the country, Bihar Chief Minister has advocated for the implementation of Reservation provisions for Dalits belonging to Christian and Muslim communities.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, while inaugurating the Dalit Muslim Rights Convention to mark the first death anniversary of Shehnai maestro Ustad Bismillah Khan in Patna on Tuesday, said that it was about time the dalits of Muslim and Christian communities were included in the reservation provisions that had been denied to them for much too long, Patna Daily reported.
"Two separate commissions have already recommended reservations for the Muslim and Christian dalits. The central government should move fast now for their implementations," the Chief Minister said at the convention organized at the Ravindra Bhawan.
Kumar said it was only fair to provide reservation for the extreme backwards within the Muslim and Christian community particularly in view of the fact that the extreme backwards were already enjoying the benefits of reservation.
It is the first time a Chief Minister belonging to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has supported the dalit rights in the country.
It may be noted that on the recommendation of the Justice Misra Commission, Supreme Court hearing on July 19 through the Chief Justice has given Government of India eight weeks time to come before the Court again to disclose its decision on the issue.
The final hearing in the Court is likely to come up by this month end or early next month.
