Church initiative helps students attend Copenhagen Summit

A church-sponsored initiative helped two students in Madhya Pradesh represent India at the Copenhagen Climate Summit.

Both the students were felicitated at a function at St. Mary's School, Bhopal, which has been credited for educating and inspiring the students to be part of the climate campaign.

The students - Ramsa Sajid and Aadya Dube - got selected to the Summit through a national level essay competition held through out the country. The duo was part of the church-initiated 'Matr Chaav Abhiyan' (Save Earth Movement).

The essay competition was organised by World Wide Federation India in collaboration with environmental ministry. The topic given was "Youth Contribution to Environmental Protection".

The youngest delegate of the Climate Summit Ramsha Sajid, a tenth class student, said, "We need to take up this upheaval task individually. As a student I suggest that we use less paper, use refills rather than buying new pens etc. Such steps can help save earth."

While the other participant Aadya Dube tells, "Even small steps by individuals can help save this earth. Let us not wait for others to do the job but take up this task as a mission, serving the earth is serving the mother."

Fr. Anand Muttungal, Director of the Matr Chaav Abiyan, welcomed the children. He said, "The selection of children belonging to this movement has given us a hope that more children will join the scheme. It can definitely help children to become part of the efforts to save this earth and make it a better place to live."

The Matr Chaav Abhiyan movement was launched in all fifty districts of Madhya Pradesh in August to encourage students to contribute to the protection of earth by planting trees.

The movement aims at sowing about twenty thousand plants in the entire state.
