Dr Azad Marshall, Moderator and President Bishop of the Church of Pakistan, launched his new book on the observance of Holy Lent during a landmark Holy Communion Service at Holy Trinity Church in Dubai on February 23, 2025. The event drew senior leaders from across the Anglican Communion, marking a rare convergence of ecclesiastical authority.

Bishop Marshall presided over the communion alongside Archbishop Hosam Naoum, Primate of the Episcopal Church of Jerusalem and the Middle East, and Bishop Sean Semple of the Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf. Their participation underscored the growing collaboration between different Anglican branches in the region.

The book tackles the spiritual disciplines of Lent - prayer, fasting, and almsgiving - explaining how these practices build humility, strengthen faith, and deepen connection to Christ. Marshall crafted the work as both theological exploration and practical guide, encouraging a transformative approach to the season.

“I encourage you to read this book and walk together in unity during this Lenten journey,” urged Archbishop Naoum during the service. He described the launch as “a privilege” while addressing the congregation.

Bishop Semple echoed this endorsement, calling the publication “a wonderful guide to journeying through Lent and deepening our faith.” He expressed hope that readers would “grow in faith and understand God’s call more clearly” through engaging with the text.

Rev Rufus Khokhar, Presbyter In charge of the Urdu-Speaking Congregation at Holy Trinity, welcomed the distinguished visitors to the Dubai church. Other clergy in attendance included Rev Prem Mitra, Chaplain of Dubai Chaplaincy; Rev Shahzad Gill, Senior Chaplain to the President Bishop of the Church of Pakistan; Rev Javed M. Inayat, Presbyter Incharge of the Urdu-Speaking Parish of the Evangelical Church in Al Ain; and Rev Fernandus Wilson with Mrs Lesley Marshall.

Bishop Marshall reflected on the historical context of the gathering, referencing previous visits by Anglican leaders to the region. “Today is a joyful and historic occasion as we three bishops come together in this Holy Communion Service,” he told those assembled.

The local congregation expressed appreciation for the presence of church leaders from different traditions, viewing the service as a milestone in their faith journey.

Beyond its devotional content, Marshall’s book serves as a seasonal guide preparing readers for Easter. Through scriptural analysis and personal insight, the text reframes Lent as a time of hope and renewal rather than austerity alone.

Archbishop Naoum summarised the day’s significance: “Today, we had a wonderful service, worshipped together, broke bread together, and shared the Word of God.” He extended greetings from Jerusalem to those present.

The launch of Marshall’s book positions it as a contribution to Anglican Lenten literature while highlighting the Church of Pakistan’s theological voice within the broader communion.
