Churches stand united with the Prime Minister to eradicate poverty

On the celebration of 60 years Indian Independence, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh addressed the nation from the ramparts of Red fort and asked the country to stand united and fight against poverty which is a concerned issue of the nation.

The Prime minister urged the people of the country to use the economic progress of the past decade to improve the lives of numberless rural poor.

Dr Singh described India's malnutrition rates as a "national shame” and called for effort to eradicate malnutrition within the next five years.

"Gandhi's dream of a free India will only be fully realized when we banish poverty and succeed in raising the 300 million poorest citizens out of poverty," said Dr Singh.

Shockingly more than 160,000 children in India are dying every year of malnutrition and half of the nation’s children are under–fed.

It also must be noted that some north Indian states poverty rates exceed those of sub–Saharan Africa.

The message of Dr Singh containing the vision to eradicate poverty and build a better India is the same dream the churches and Christians in the country are carrying on.

Supporting and standing united with the Prime Minister, the churches hope to cohesively work to produce a blessed nation.
