The coordinator of Global Council of Indian Christians (GCIC), today, was arrested by the police in Baliguda at Kandhamal district, Orissa.
Rev. Asit Kumar Mohanty, the co–coordinator for the GCIC eastern region of the country was arrested at 2pm in Orissa.
"Rev. Asit Kumar Mohanty was following up cases of continued oppression and forced conversions of Dalit Christians at gun point by VHP and other radical organizations in Baliguda at Kandhamal district," reported GCIC.
It said, Rev Mohanti was visiting the Baliguda court in connection with the false cases fostered on Christians, he was apprehended by the police in cahoots with the anti Christian extra constitutional force operation in the district to annihilate Christian community.
When the President of the Global Council of Indian Christians, Dr Sajan. K. George contacted Mr Nikil Kannodia, the superindent of Kandhamal police; he was informed that Rev. Asit was detained on complaints from Baliguda lawyers of trespassing and obstructing justice.
Rev. Asit alleged that he was dragged over 500 meters and the police escort even physically assaulted him on road to the police station and the district magistrate.
GCIC, meanwhile, appealed to "people of goodwill to write to the chief Minister of Orissa, NHRC, NCM and the Prime minister of India protesting against illegal detention of GCIC coordinator Rev. Asit Kumar Mohanti."
