A sharp decline in the number of active COVID-19 cases and fatalities has offered all Indians a ray of hope after 146 days of fighting against the virus.
On Friday, the active cases decreased to 3.63 lakh for the first time since mid-July.
While the death toll rose to 1,42,618 on December 11, more than 93,21,249 people have recovered from COVID-19 infection. The country showed 94.85 per cent recovery rate, which outnumbered the new cases.
According to Worldometer, India has 103 deaths per million, which is approximately half the global average.
Experts believe that sustained strict restrictions and faster herd immunity among individuals living in clusters, such as slums, must have contributed to the country's high recovery and reduced mortality rates.
In addition, childhood immunization against polio, diphtheria, and whooping cough is thought to have contributed to the faster recovery.
So far, over 150 million tests have been performed and the country eagerly awaits for the vaccine, which is expected to arrive within the next few weeks.
