Kochi – The yearlong 15th centenary celebrations of the famous St Mary's Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church at Kothamangalam in Ernakulam district has begun from August 14.
Union Minister of State for Statistics Oscar Fernandes formally inaugurated the centenary celebrations that will see a number of charity and social activities to mark the year.
Construction of 101 houses for the poor, holding of mass marriage, disbursement of education assistance, holding of medical camps and seminars would form part of celebrations, the Church officials have confirmed.
Catholicos Mar Baselios Thomas I, the metropolitan of Malankara Syrian Church presided over the inaugural function that was attended by other relgious leaders and political figures, the organisers said.
Believed to be one of the earliest Christian churches in Kerala, it was established in the fourth century. But the first parish meeting was held in 1936, marking its formal launch on records, Jacobite Church spokesman Fr. Varghese Kallappara said.
