For the first time in India, those interested in the study of art and science of human movement, otherwise known as Kinesiology, can study and obtain a degree in the subject.
Karunya University India in partnership with University of Regina Canada will be offering a four-year Bachelor of Kinesiology in Human Kinetics (BKin Human Kinetics) and another degree programme in Gerontology (BKin Gerontology).
The course, set to begin on September 6, 2011, will include studies on human anatomy and physiology, growth and development, motor learning, social psychology and research methodology.
Growing emphasis of non-communicable diseases and lifestyle factors impacting the health of the Indian population provides a great opportunity for students with a background in kinesiology.
While Human Kinetics explores the relationship between the body and activity, Gerontology is the study on social, psychological and biological aspects of aging.
With nearly $5 million in research funding being held currently by various faculty members, the course is an ideal choice for those interested in pre-professional studies like medicine, physical therapy or occupational therapy.
The Human Kinetics major will prepare one to work in the areas of physical fitness appraisal, exercise rehabilitation, counselling, exercise leadership, lifestyle management, health promotion and wellness.
The University of Regina provides a dynamic, innovative and supportive learning experience with a growing national reputation for excellence in teaching and research. The University's comprehensive services and programs prepare students to excel in local and global communities, and its research opportunities attract the best and brightest minds.
The Bachelor of Kinesiology at the University of Regina has four major options: Human Kinetics, Gerontology, Adapted Movement Science and Health Promotion. At present, the two major options available to students from Karunya University are Human Kinetics and Gerontology.
The University's brand new, well equipped research laboratories will allow researchers to investigate a number of topics, including falls in the elderly, psychophysiological correlates of mild brain trauma, nutrition and exercise interventions on osteoporosis, childhood and obesity, the effects of early introduction of body checking in hockey, proprioceptive influences in motor control, volunteerism in sport, ethical decision-making by health professionals, and aboriginal health issues, to name just a few.
The Faculty is home to world-class researchers with international reputations that are working at the cutting edge in kinesiology and health studies.
The Bachelor of Kinesiology program requires the completion of 120 credit hours (40 course-equivalents) in core, major, and fieldwork. Students will get to study two years at Karunya and the other two at the University of Regina in Canada. The fee in India will be Rs. 3 lakh a year. There will be 15 students in each programme.
