Making Sure the Grinch Won’t Steal Christmas

'Tis the season, but the season of what?
Christmas is under assault, with political correctness playing the role of the Grinch.
Countless retail stores across the country have replaced "Merry Christmas" with "Happy Holidays" out of fears of being offensive.

But then Christians were feeling alienated, so now they are fighting back.

Chancellor of Liberty University, Reverend Jerry Falwell, stated, "The fact is, we've gone on the offense now. We've put them on the defensive. We're kicking their butts, and they're unhappy."
Some companies have already backed down from the pressure. Target denied banning the words "Merry Christmas" and ridding its stores of Salvation Army bell ringers.

Macy's has backed away from solely using the all–encompassing "Happy Holidays" in its ads. And those trees at Lowe's stores –– they are Christmas trees once again.

In Boston, the threat of a lawsuit from Falwell spurred a name change for its tree.
Boston Mayor Thomas Menino said, "As long as I'm concerned, it's a Christmas tree. It's a Christmas tree in my house, a Christmas tree in the Boston Common. It may be a holiday party, but it's a Christmas tree to me."

It is the same story in Washington, where House Speaker Dennis Hastert wants to call the evergreen on the Capitol Lawn what it is –– a "Christmas tree," not a "holiday tree."

So maybe there will be Christmas in Whoville this year, even though that puts a damper on the holidays for some.

One feminist remarked, "I think that it's inappropriate that the name was changed to Christmas Tree."

"Jerry Falwell has found that this war on Christmas is a very good, healthy fundraising mechanism. And that's just about all this is," commented Barry Lynn of the People United for the Separation of Church and State.

And while some may say that this is just semantics, others say it is just the latest example of the secular war. And that is why Christians will not give up Christmas without a fight.
