In a historic two-day celebration that concluded on 22 December 2024, Maromi Village Baptist Church (MVBC) in Zunheboto district, Nagaland, commemorated its centenary of Christianity with ceremonies and reflection under the theme “Envisioning God’s Faithfulness”.
The celebration commenced on December 21 with Rev. Dr. Khehovi Shohe, Director of Sumi Baptist Convention, delivering a message about the true meaning of jubilee. “Jubilee is not about extravagance or feasting, but rather about forgiveness and embracing God more closely”, he emphasised to the congregation. He further challenged the gathering to demonstrate the jubilee spirit through exemplary living.
In a symbolic gesture linking past to present, Yeiko Aye, great-grandson of the village’s first Christian convert, lit the jubilee candles. The evening’s proceedings began with a welcome address by Akukau/GB Tokiho Zhimo, followed by jubilee greetings from Assistant Fishery Inspector, Zunheboto Jekugha Jimo. Kikhezhe Sumi delivered a presentation, whilst Vino A Awomi read from scripture.
The celebration’s first day was marked by the unveiling of a centenary gate and convergence hall by MVBC pastor Rev. Yetoho Achumi. The Youth Leader MVBC Mughakali P Aye concluded the evening with a benediction after performances by the Maromi Union Zunheboto and the Jubilee choir.
The second day saw Executive Secretary of SBAK-Aizuto, Rev. Dr. Daniel Chishi, unveiling the Jubilee monolith. In his address, Rev. Dr. Chishi provided historical context, noting that the Sumi community’s Christian journey began 120 years ago, with at least eight churches under SBAK-Aizuto having reached their centennial milestone.
However, his message carried a note of concern regarding the current state of Christianity in the region. “Whilst 100 years marks maturity, we are still like breastfeeding infants and remain in a state of confusion”, he observed, expressing worry about the increase in denominations at the expense of seeking Christ.
The morning session included a devotional service by Pastor Kivilho Shohe of Sutemi Baptist Church, and greetings from Niheto Shohe, convenor of the Finance Committee Centennial Jubilee. Akheto Awomi, chairman of Akuluto-VK Area CLF, SBAK-Aizuto, led the offertory prayer. The Women Leader of Maromi Baptist Akukuhou, Abigail Zhimo, led the morning benediction before the grand Jubilee feast.
The evening’s valedictory and thanksgiving service was led by Avikali Wokhami, Women Leader of Atoizu Town Baptist Church, with Pastor Rev. Yetoho Achumi delivering the address. The programme featured musical presentations by Iska K Nillo and the Jubilee choir, scripture reading by Livika V Wokhami, and devotion by Shelito K Chishi, Women Leader of Lizu Old BC.
The centennial jubilee concluded with retired pastor Kumgha Yeptho offering the final benediction, followed by fireworks and a bonfire, marking the end of two days of spiritual reflection and community celebration in Maromi Village, demonstrating the enduring impact of Christianity in this region of Zunheboto district.
