Nuns working with Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity (MC) in Haiti are safe, according to a Catholic source.
The Indian government last week expressed concern over MC nuns feared missing in the destruction caused by the earthquake.
However, a recent update from the religious order which is active in over 133 countries expressed relief over the safety of the nuns working in Haiti.
Sister Christie, the congregation's spokeswoman, told the Asian church news agency UCA News that they have learned from various sources that all their nuns in the quake-hit Caribbean nation are accounted for.
The nun, who handles the congregation's media relations, said although they are relieved, they are deeply saddened by the devastation and loss of life.
According to Christie, the MC nuns in Haiti manage nine houses and work with the destitute, handicapped and orphaned children.
The Indian government, meanwhile, has promised US$1 million in cash for immediate emergency relief.
It is believed that as many as 100,000 people may have died, and some 70,000 already been buried in the 7.0 magnitude quake which struck 15km southwest of capital Port-au-Prince.
Relief groups, including World Vision and Christian Aid, are trying to address immediate needs such as clean water and medical supplies.
