Millions of believers are expected to flock to what could be term as an arguably the biggest Christian pilgrim center in the country, the festival of Velankanni Church has begun.
Velankanni Church in a coastal town in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, August 29, commenced the festival celebrating the birth of 'Our Lady of health'–as known and called by the Marian devotees in the country.
The Annai Velankanni church hoisted the flag commencing the beginning of the Velankanni period which extends till September 10th–when the flag is dismounted, followed by a car procession.
The Velankanni Church located in Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu–attracts over 5 million faithful devotees, most of them clad in saffron robes.
The visitors include surprise guests and people of all faith, from abroad as well as India. They eagerly partake in the procession led by the Marian devotees who walk bare foot, some carrying flags and pulling small cars decorated with forms and images of Mother Mary.
The church got its name 'Arokiya Matha Church'–after healings and miracles, especially health related were reported.
Portuguese sailors who escaped from a severe cyclone, built the chapel 24 feet to 12 feet, as a token of gratitude to Mother Mary.
