A seven-foot tall statue of Mother Teresa was unveiled in Bangalore on Wednesday. It was inaugurated by Archbishop of Bangalore, Bernard Moras.
The statue that weighs 1.5 tonnes and made out of rock, was installed in Mother Teresa Circle on Richmond Road.
It was chipped by 85-year-old sculptor Putten Acharya and is said to have taken six months for completion.
Archbishop Moras, speaking to a crowd at Sacred Hearts Church in Bangalore, hailed Mother Teresa as an icon of "service, sacrifice, simplicity and obedience." He hoped people find inspiration in the Nobel Peace Prize laureate's everlasting love for God and the poor.
Mother Teresa reportedly visited the Sacred Hearts Church in 1995 for its centenary celebration. It was following her visit the street was named after her.
Meantime, Archbishop Moras also dedicated the Sacred Heart PU College in the city. The college, he said, will much benefit the poor and underprivileged those have been deprived of education.
