The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday issued a notice to the Orissa government, inquiring the measures undertaken to provide security to Christians during Christmas in the state.
The NHRC asked the chief secretary and the Director General of Police (DGP) to submit a report on the measures taken to protect the lives and properties of Christians.
The apprehensions by the commission came after Congress leader Margaret Alva complained on the shutdown declared on December 25.
Alva informed the NHRC that violence might erupt in the state with the bandh call declared by Hindu groups protesting the murder of Swami Laxmananda Saraswati.
The state government, meanwhile, has beefed up its security, even as district superintendents of police were ordered to be 'watchful' of worship and prayer houses during Christmas season.
Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik, had earlier said: "The government will come down heavily on those who try to create any trouble," adding that the state authorities will not approve the shutdown.
