Over 10,000 Dalits rally demanding reservation in private sector, judiciary, armed forces

At least 10,000 Dalits from across the nation assembled at Ramila Ground, New Delhi urging the Government to render reservation in private sector, judiciary, armed forces and SC/ST employment.

Christian groups, including the All India Christian Council took part in the rally, supporting the demands of the Dalits.

National chairman of the All India Confederation of SC/ST Organisations Dr. Udit Raj, in a memorandum submitted to Prime Minister urged the government to enact the Reservation Act without any delay.

Speaking on the filling up of backlog vacancies for Dalits in Government sector, Dr. Raj said Dr Singh had himself told him in his recent meeting that 53,000 posts had been filled.

But this was nothing considering the number of backlog posts, Dr. Raj said.

Raj noted that out of a total 610 judges, only 20 belong to Dalit community. "All judicial services should be introduced as provided under Article 312 of the Constitution to ensure participation of Dalits in higher judiciary," he said.
