PM addresses the nation on its 60th Independence day

Today the nation celebrates its 60th year golden age of Indian Independence which is one of India's biggest secular celebrations.

August 15, commemorates the day in 1947, when India after more than two hundred years of British rule, finally won its freedom giving birth to a soaring nation.

While schools, colleges, offices and organizations remain closed today, cultural programs, flag hosting and other national activities would be adjoined with the festive mood in New Delhi and other parts of the country.

Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh on the occasion of the 60th anniversary addressed the nation from the ramparts of Red Fort.

"Over the last three years, we have significantly increased public expenditure in the social sectors. This is in line with our commitment to the welfare of the aam aadmi (common man)," he said.

Prime minister, Manmohan Singh also mentioned the key initiatives of the Government this year. Some of them are massive increase in public spending on Education, health care, agriculture, rural development, scheme for the poor, promoting social security, old age pension scheme, industrialization, urbanization, reviving education and opening skill centers and more.

Meanwhile, Churches and Christian based organizations in India will hold special Independence Day service to bless and pray for the nation.
