Proof that sins do catch up with the sinners

God is everywhere. He sees it all, He knows it all. There will come a pay day. Be sure your sins will find you out" These may be harsh words for those tempted to take short cuts to fortune or to power. Probably the bribing of the poor with saris to get their votes could have gone unnoticed but for the stampede, which claimed 21 lives in Lucknow on April 12. The gifts were given away during the celebration of a birthday by a political leader. Most of them were poor women lured to the function by the promise of free saris. Opposition parties have approached the Election Commission complaining the conduct rules of election were violated. What was planned in secret is now news.

Again, all attempts to hide the sins of those who had butchered innocents during the Gujarat riots seem to boomerang with the Supreme Court ordering a retrial in the Best Bakery case and also directing that the retrial be held in Maharashtra. Passing the order, judges observed that the justice delivery system had been abused, misused and mutilated by subterfuge. The Supreme Court Bench also expunged the critical observations made by the Gujarat High Court against the social activist Teesta Setalvad, for championing the cause of the riot victims. The power of truth to pierce through falsehood was again manifested when just on the eve of the all–India medical entrance test the police arrested two youths including a medical student, on charges of leaking question papers. The young people had thought of getting rich quick through sale of pre–medical examination papers for prices ranging from rupees seven to ten lakh. Now their ambition has put to lot of trouble nearly two and a half lakh applicants sitting for the entrance examination in more than 420 centers. Clearly, immoral activity or sinful acts have their consequences — even while no one is watching the commission of a sin.

The young men in question must at least remember the lines of this poem below when tempted: There's a God who's standing at Heaven's door,/He’s looking this universe o'er./And He sees each mortal with a searching eye/You can't do wrong and get by/Out into the darkness you alone may go/And seeds for the wicked one sow;/ There's an eye that’s watching from the throne on high:/You can't do wrong and get by./Yes, He knows your secrets, every thing that you do./He knows that your life is untrue;/ You can ne'er deceive Him, there's no use to try./You can't do wrong and get by.
