Kolkata – The Bangiya Christiya Pariseba , the apex body of the Christian community in West Bengal, recently demonstrated in protest against the state government's alleged interference in the admission process of some primary teachers’ training institutes run by the church.
The demonstrators demanded that the government “restore the rights” of the church–run institutes to admit students on their own and reserve 50 per cent of seats for Christian students.
Pariseba general secretary Herod Mullick promised to move Calcutta High Court if the state government did not stop interfering in the admission process.
Secretary of United Missionary PTTI, Arunodoy Mondal said the institutes had submitted a list of selected candidates to the director of public instruction (DPI). Separate lists were prepared for SC/ST, handicapped, Christians and general candidates.
“While in earlier years, the DPI had sent back the vetted lists without change, this time they have dropped the names of all Christian candidates,” he said.
