Thousands join pre-Christmas rally in Jaipur

Churches in Jaipur on Sunday united for a pre-Christmas rally to spread the Yuletide message of peace.

Organised by Jaipur Pastors' Fellowship, the rally brought together about 3,000 Christians from various denominations, and stressed on peace and unity.

Vicar general of Jaipur diocese Fr Edward Olivera said it was an occasion for the community to proclaim the message of Christ even as they reach out to other communities.

"Jaipur has seen so many unfortunate incidents in recent times including the IOC fire which claimed over 11 lives and the swine flu menace which continues to be a threat to human life. In this situation, only God can help us," media quoted Fr Olivera saying.

He said Christmas was not only an occasion for celebration but also to pray to the Lord and seek His intervention to surmount crisis.

Meanwhile, a Christmas fair in Madhya Pradesh was reportedly attacked by radicals who chanted Hindu slogans and damaged biblical artworks depicting scenes from the life of Christ.

Archbishop Leo Cornelio of Bhopal said the attack "is a matter of serious concern for Christians especially when we are preparing to celebrate Christmas," according to UCA News.

Archbishop Cornelio said he would seek protection for Christians and their institutions, especially on Christmas Eve.
