World Vision India, with the support of Coca-Cola India and its bottlers in the region – Brindavan Bottlers Private Limited and Amrit Bottlers Private Limited – have successfully restored 20 rainwater harvesting ponds in Barabanki district, UP.
The project was launched in 2009 and dedicated to the community on the occasion of World Water Day on Tuesday, March 22, by Barabanki District Magistrate Mr. Vikas Gothalwal.
As a result of the 20 renovated ponds, water storage capacity has increased from 36,670.49 m3 to 74,652.64 m3. About 211 acres of ground water has been recharged. This intervention has enhanced the irrigation facilities and has in turn led to increase in water table, providing easy access to water through tube wells, hand pumps and wells.
World Vision said 224 small and marginal farmers in the community now are the direct beneficiaries to have access to water, even in hot summer. The farmers who were cultivating only one crop a year will now be able to cultivate 3 crops a year. The parents also can now afford to send their children to school and provide them with nutritious food.
