Kottayam – The global meet of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), held as part of the 150th year celebrations of the organisation in Kottayam, concluded on August 26 with a clarion call for a better understanding of the misery brought out by rampant globalisation and marginalization of the poor and a vision and firm commitment to correct it through peace and justice.
Rev. Caesar K L Molebatasi, President, World Alliance of YMCAs, inaugurated the meet, mapping the progress YMCA has made over the years. He said that the role of YMCA has acquired a new dimension as the world has transformed into a global village unlike the Colonial times.
Expressing his concerns that the new globalised world faces a set of problems like the threat of HIV/AIDS, mounting corruption, tremendous oppression and increasing level of poverty, Rev. Molebatasi urged YMCA members to function as ambassadors to “make peace with justice.”
On why India was selected as the venue for the global fete, Molebatasi said the country taught the world the meaning of democracy and secularism.
The call made at the opening meet of the global celebrations held in Mumbai had made it clear that the YMCA should lead the world to spirituality and make one learn to become the citizens of the world, he said.
Rev. Philipose Mar Chrysostum, Marthoma Metropolitan, presided over the meet. Bart Shaha, secretary general, World Alliance of YMCAs, delivered the keynote address.
Archbishop Kuriakose Kunnacherry, Rev. Issac Mar Clemis and Rev. Thomas Samuel delivered the benedictory speeches.
Rev. Samuel D Stephen, President, Asia and Pacific Alliance of YMCAs, led the worship and service and reaffirmation of Paris basis, which was adopted as a basis of membership in the World Alliance of YMCAs at the first world conference held in 1815.
J Alexander, YMCA National President, gave the jubilee message. National general Secretary T Thomas and municipal Chairman B Gopakumar also spoke on the occasion. P M John, executive member, World Alliance of YMCAs, released a directory.
M C Cyriac, YMCA south–west regional Chairman, welcomed the gathering and secretary Jose Varghese proposed a vote of thanks.
