Shekar Kapur's latest controversial movie Elizabeth – The Golden Age, has failed to evoke response from the public. The movie earned the ire of the Catholic Church, which last week, asked the Censor Board to remove scenes that unnecessarily targeted its leaders and beliefs.
"The movie unnecessarily targets the Catholic Church and its leaders and this is not acceptable to a community that respects other religions and other leaders," CBCI spokesperson Rev Babu Joseph told PTI quoting the letter.
"To present Catholicism in a distorted manner is an insult to its followers, not only in India but elsewhere also," the letter said.
On the other hand, the ongoing Bandra festival also kept the viewers away from the movie. However, some Bandraites expressed interest in watching the film to discern why the movie received protests.
Joseph also claimed that international scholars and historians have described the sequel as an "anti–Papal travesty and wrong in both fact and inclination".
Father Babu John, spokesperson for the Catholic Bishops Conference of India said, “The disclaimer in the movie states that history is a matter of interpretation and the film was one such. We have decided to let the matter be.”
