Knowing God

1 Cor 2:10

But God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.

Knowing God means reading and trusting Him, realizing His divine nature, receiving His son as the Savior, obeying His words, and rejoicing in His love. The world has been frequently using the quotation of a philosopher: "Know yourself." Christians, like the people in the world, have been trying to accumulate a store of knowledge of themselves. They are trying to possess more of their knowledge than knowing God more. Because they are trying to accumulate their knowledge, the spiritual growth can not be accomplished for them.

What today's church needs the most is knowing Christ. Namely, it is to have the deeper and fuller knowledge of Christ. Paul said, "I want to know Christ and the power of resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead"(Phil 3:10, 11). Paul prayed for more truthful, deeper and fuller knowledge in order to know Jesus better. Even though they were filled with faith and love, Ephesians were praying for acquiring the deeper knowledge of Jesus(Eph 1:17–19). In order for us to know Jesus better, we have to read the Bible. When we listen to a sermon, we need to listen with an ardent passion to know more of Christ. And even when we pray for us and the church, we ought to pray to know Jesus better because this exactly becomes the prayer of being sealed with the Holy Spirit.
However, knowing the deeper knowledge of Christ is possible only through the work of the Holy Spirit. Thus, Paul said, "I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better"(Eph 1:17). This "spirit of wisdom" indicates the Holy Spirit, The Holy Spirit possesses all the knowledge of God. "but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God"(1 Cor 2:10). Therefore, first we ought to ask the Holy Spirit for the deeper knowledge of Christ(Luke 11:13).
