A movie on the life and faith of St. Alphonsa is underway following the canonisation of the Kerala born nun by Pope and the Catholic Church last week.
According to the directors Jayeendra Sharma and Jose Roopakala, the biography of Alphonsa will be made into a script bringing her human qualities and spiritual life. The movie will also help people understand the social harmony that existed during the period, they say.
While actress Mahima will play the lead role in the movie, Dr. Saji Kadamala will pen the screenplay, which begins with a priest narrating the story of St. Alphonsa to a group of children visiting her tomb in Bharanangam.
Alphonsa born on Aug 19, 1910 became the first Indian nun to be canonised by Pope Benedict XVI at a ceremony in St. Peter's Square, attended by over 5,000 Indian Christians including a 15–member delegation led by Union Labor Minister, Oscar Fernandes.
Canonisation is a Catholic tradition by which the Church declares a deceased person to be a saint and is included in the canon, or list, of recognized saints. Originally, individuals were recognised as saints without any formal process.
