Making a remarkable political comeback, Donald Trump has secured victory in the 2024 US presidential election, defeating Democratic candidate Kamala Harris to become America's 47th president. The Republican candidate's triumph was sealed after winning crucial battleground states, including Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania - the same “blue wall” states that proved decisive in previous elections.

The former president's victory marks an extraordinary return to power, coming despite his legal challenges and two reported assassination attempts during the campaign. Trump's win was confirmed after Vice President Kamala Harris, who stepped in as the Democratic nominee following President Biden's withdrawal, conceded defeat on Wednesday afternoon.

Indian Leadership's Response

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first world leaders to congratulate Trump on his victory. Sources revealed that during their telephone conversation, Trump expressed warm sentiments towards Modi, reportedly describing India as “a magnificent country” and Modi as “a magnificent man.” The president-elect also conveyed that “the whole world loves PM Modi” and affirmed that he considers Modi and India true friends.

Modi took to social media platform X to share details of their exchange, emphasising his anticipation of strengthening India-US relations across various sectors including technology, defence, energy, and space. The Indian Prime Minister highlighted the potential for renewed collaboration in enhancing the India-US Comprehensive Global and Strategic Partnership.

Opposition Leaders' Perspectives

The Indian National Congress, the country’s primary opposition party, also extended congratulations to the president-elect. Party President Mallikarjun Kharge emphasised the robust comprehensive global strategic partnership between the two nations, noting that it is founded on shared democratic values, aligned interests, and extensive people-to-people connections.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi posted his congratulations on X, wishing Trump success in his second term while also extending good wishes to Kamala Harris for her future endeavours.

Diplomatic Analysis

Senior Congress leader and former diplomat Shashi Tharoor offered a measured analysis of what Trump's presidency might mean for India. While acknowledging the positive personal chemistry between Trump and Modi, Tharoor highlighted potential challenges in areas such as trade and immigration.

Tharoor particularly emphasised Trump's transactional leadership style, warning that he “is definitely going to demand a pound of flesh for every pound he gives us.” He recalled previous tensions, including Trump's decision to remove India from the GSP preferences list and his characterisation of India as a “major offender” regarding tariffs.

The diplomat-turned-politician also expressed concerns about potential immigration restrictions that could affect Indian professionals working in the United States, suggesting there might be “major delays and smaller numbers, as well as hassles in bringing family members over.”

However, former diplomat Mani Shankar Aiyar struck a more critical tone, expressing “deep regret” over Trump's election. He questioned the close rapport between Modi and Trump, suggesting it “reflects very badly on PM Modi and his personal preferences.”

Trump's victory comes at a crucial time for US-India relations, with both nations seeking to navigate complex global challenges. The president-elect is set to assume office on January 20, with his party securing control of the Senate while House control remains undetermined.

The US markets responded positively to Trump's victory, with stocks, Tesla, banks, and bitcoin all showing significant gains as investors appeared to welcome the prospect of Trump returning to the White House.
